The Garden of the Towers

The Jardin des Tours is located in the south-eastern part of the site. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century by Maurice Tranchant de Lunel, the first Inspector of Historic Monuments in Rabat.

He designed the garden based on traditional irrigation systems based on canals connecting different flower beds.

The garden is embellished with meandering streams and small ponds that add to its charm. These water features provide a cool feeling and often attract birds, making them a great place for wildlife viewing.

The Chellah site is also a haven for wildlife, including white storks.

These majestic birds can be seen perched on trees or flying over gardens, adding a touch of grace to the surroundings.
At the tops of the trees and on the ruins, the storks have set up their nests and the walker observe their celestial merry-go-round.
Small, though less conspicuous, mammals such as lizards, squirrels and hedgehogs may be present in the wooded areas and gardens of the site.

The Chellah is an oasis of greenery in the middle of ancient ruins.

It offers a peaceful landscape, with grassy areas, shady trees, lush plants and a very diverse flora with a multitude of plant species typical of the Mediterranean region. You can find shrubs, bushes there. Plant species include olive trees, cypresses, date palms and fig trees. There are more than 80 species.

The atmosphere that emerges illustrates the perpetual conflict between stones and nature. The abundant vegetation that tops part of the remains seems to struggle with the remains to obtain a prominent place on the site. The combination of remains and vegetation gives a timeless charm to Chellah, a source of romanticism and reflection on the work of men and their inscription in posterity, in History.

Outside the Chellah site and on the edge of the Bouregreg, a variety of aquatic plants, including reeds and rushes, grow along the banks.

Below the ramparts of Chellah, vegetable terraces are set up.

On these terraces, gardeners grow a variety of edible plants, including vegetables such as tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, cucumbers, as well as aromatic herbs such as basil, thyme, and mint. These crops are carefully maintained and bring a touch of freshness and vitality to the site.
